Rumors of a rugged version of the new Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone started surfacing about a month ago and now some leaked pictures accompany that rumor.
The Galaxy S4 just launched recently as the successor of the popular Galaxy S3 smartphone and is already enjoying high demand, but Samsung is reportedly planning to launch a new, more rugged version of the flagship.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that this waterproof, dustproof version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be called the Galaxy S4 Active. After numerous rumors and speculation, the purported handset now appears in some leaked photos.
While many expected this rugged version to sport a very similar design to the original Samsung Galaxy S4, it now seems that this "ruggedizing" will sport a slightly different look. The leaked images surfaced courtesy of GSM Arena and feature a bright red smartphone with black trimming that appears in either end on the back, while also framing the display on the front.
The purported handset sports what looks like a 480 pixel-per-inch (ppi) display, which stirs up some confusion regarding the actual display size of the device. Previous rumors claimed the rugged Galaxy S4 would have a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display. GSM Arena's tipster reportedly confirmed the handset will have an 8-megapixel camera, not the rumored 13-megapixel shooter.
The leaked images further show an AnTuTu benchmark screen, which indicates that the smartphone packs a quad-core ARMv7 processor and an Adreno 320 GPU under the hood. The processor manufacturer was never at the center of the Galaxy S4 Active rumors.
The South Korean tech giant typically makes at least two versions of each handset for different markets. This means that if the rugged version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is aimed at the American market, it may pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. It remains unclear at this point whether it will maintain some specs of the original Galaxy S4 such as Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 2GB of RAM or the 2,600 mAh battery.
The purported handset has no exact or official launch date, but apparently it already popped up in Croatia. If this is any indication, an announcement may be imminent.
