The Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 devices have been spotted running a new software build, presumably the upcoming Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
Google just rolled out the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean recently, but the company is apparently testing the next major OS version already. The new version of Jelly Bean is widely expected to be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
Two Google devices, the Nexus 7 and Nexus 4, have now been spotted at the Chromium Bug tracker with a build number KRS36B, suggesting that Google may be testing its next version of Android. Android Headline was the first one to spot the new build and notes that it's time to keep an eye out for the next Android build. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is expected to make its debut in October, along with the next-generation Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.
So far, Android updates have been named after desserts and came in alphabetical order. As previously mentioned, the successor to Android Jelly Bean is widely expected to launch as Key Lime Pie, but Google has not confirmed this yet. As the publication further notes, the build number suggests the Key Lime Pie name is correct. The first letter of the build usually corresponds to the first letter of the major Android version (Android 4.3, for instance, has the build number of JWR66V - the first letter is "J," as in Jelly Bean), so it's likely that the "K" in the new build number KRS36B corresponds to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
In remains unknown at this point exactly what changes the new OS will bring, but Android Headlines predicts that Key Lime Pie may boast a refined user interface, likely some more features, as well as enhanced NFC capabilities.
Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie was widely expected to make its debut in early summer, but Google decided to give Jelly Bean another run with a new cycle, Android 4.3. It now seems that Jelly Bean is finally reaching the end of its course and Android 5.x Key Lime Pie is ready to take its place as the latest Android version. Google has yet to confirm anything, but the fact that a new build has now been spotted on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 suggests the new OS may make an appearance in the near future.
