Microsoft confirms testing Windows 10 for devices with 512MB of RAM, including Lumia 520
Alexandra BurlacuMicrosoft's latest Windows 10 operating system (OS) aims to reach as many Lumia smartphones as possible, including the popular Nokia Lumia 520.
The company has great plans for its new Windows 10, and smartphones are part of those ambitious endeavors. Upon announcing the latest version of Windows a few months ago, Microsoft said that it wants to unify its platforms in order to make things easier for everyone. In fact, the company's motto for Windows 10 is "One product family. One platform. One Store."
One of the most intriguing aspects of this new strategy is replacing Windows Phone with Windows 10, and many are eagerly waiting to see how it will all work out.
Microsoft had already confirmed that it plans to bring Windows 10 to as many Lumia smartphones as possible, even those with just 512MB of RAM. Nevertheless, some rumors claiming that only quad-core devices would be included in the update sparked some concerns among Windows Phone device owners.
The most popular Windows Phone device to date is the entry-level Nokia Lumia 520, and the device packs a dual-core processor, not a quad-core one. Consequently, many Lumia 520 owners worried that their device may be left out in the cold once Windows 10 rolls out to Windows Phone devices.
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has now shed some light on this matter, easing concerns that the Lumia 520 would not support the new OS. More specifically, the company executive confirmed that Microsoft is testing Windows 10 on Lumia devices with 520MB of RAM or more, and specifically mentioned the Lumia 520 as part of the experience.
"Hey all: we ARE working on Win10 for 512MB, including 520. Our ambition is to make #Win10 available for these devices but features may vary," Belfiore tweeted late on Sunday, Feb. 8.
This means that the Nokia Lumia 520 should in fact get an update to the latest Windows 10 after all, even though it will may support all features that will grace high-end Windows Phone devices.
Windows 10 is not ready for public consumption just yet, but the software update is expected to start rolling out later this year. We'll keep you posted as soon as more information becomes available regarding the Windows 10 update for Lumia devices, so stay tuned.
