Australian Artists Recreate 'Fragrance' of New Apple MacBook Pro

Jonathan Charles

We're all excited when we unbox a new Apple product. However, it's not every day that we get to buy a new Apple product and unbox it. Hence, to let people like us relive the exciting moment, the smell of a new Macbook Pro is being recreated by three Australian artists. It will be made available to the public in May and will be used at the group's art show in Melbourne.

Opening a new MacBook Pro - or any Apple device - results in a fresh smell that goes away as the days and months pass. That smell has been recreated as a fragrance, though it won't be going into mass production. At least not for now.

Melbourne-based artists Gavin Bell, Jarah de Kuijer and Simon McGlinn - know together as Greatest Hits - worked with Air Aroma to create the fragrance.

"The scent created for Greatest Hits encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and of course the aluminum laptop which has come straight from the factory where it was assembled in China," the Air Aroma blog said.

The blog post added that after the initial meeting, ingredients were sourced from the South of France. The ingredients smelt of glue, plastic and paper. For comparison, a brand new Apple box was sent over to the French lab. After the fragrance was finished, the laptop travelled nearly 50,000kms back to Australia and returned to the client.

"The process of creating this signature fragrance started with an initial meeting ... to understand the concept and desired effect of the fragrance. Once this was established, the ingredients for the fragrance had to be sourced. The scent requested by our client was quite unusual so we contacted our fragrance supplies in the South of France to send over samples of fragrances with the aroma of glue, plastic, rubber and paper," the blog revealed.

The Air Aroma Aroslim will diffuse the fragrance during the art exhibition in Melbourne. The fragrance will be part of the exhibition at West Space, called "De facto Standard." The scent is for the exhibition only, Air Aroma confirmed on its blog, and won't be available for purchase anywhere.

The West Space exhibition takes place from April 20 - May 12, at 225 Bourke Street, Melbourne.
