"Diablo" turned 20 last December 31, 2016 and Blizzard Entertainment has been going all out with the celebration. Aside from releasing special in-game content with distinctly "Diablo" themes, they've decided to give long-time players a blast from the past by revisiting one of the more iconic dungeons from the first installment: the hellish cathedral located in the Kingdom of Khanduras.
The event is called "The Darkening of Tristram" and it's a 16-level recreation that lets players battle old bosses from the first "Diablo" game. Aside from being set in one of the original "Diablo" dungeons, GameSpot reports there will be other elements reminiscent of the first game. The event is playable in "Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls" and it also gives players the chance to win new rewards, achievements and special loot.
Blizzard has also seen it fit to develop a filter for this occasion. Dubbed "RetroVision," the filter gives "Diablo 3" a slightly grainier, more pixelated feel to the graphics. They've also recycled the older version of the UI, reinstated old-style sound effects from the original game and limited the range of motion to eight specific directions.
Players may still use the character classes from "Diablo 3" to fight their way through all 16 levels. Fans of the series can appreciate the attention to detail they put into recreating this dungeon as well as the effort to make this homage as retro as possible.
Polygon wrote that this event is playable for the whole month of January, after which it will be locked. However, there's a good chance of "The Darkening of Tristram" returning to commemorate the franchise's future anniversaries.
In order to play "The Darkening of Tristram," gamers need to make sure their "Diablo 3" is updated to the latest 2.4.3 patch. Aside from getting the event, they also get fixes to several bugs, updated Set and Legendary items, greater rift revisions and several quality of life changes.
