Sony announced on Monday, Nov. 19, the launch of the PlayStation Mobile Developer Program, opening the gates for developers to create content for PlayStation Mobile.
The launch of this developer program follows the PlayStation Mobile launch at the beginning of last month, on Oct. 3.
PlayStation Mobile is a platform where users can play games on PlayStation-certified devices, including Vita and select Android smartphones. Following the launch of the Developer Program in nine countries, the catalog of available content is expected to rise within the next few months.
"Get ready to see this library expand in the coming months, because today we are happy to announce the launch of the PlayStation Mobile Developer Program, which provides an enhanced and open environment for content developers to create and release their content on PlayStation Mobile," reads the announcement on the company's blog. "The Dev Portal provides everything a developer needs to start working on PlayStation Mobile."
Basically, developers can now access the necessary resources to start working on content for PlayStation Mobile via the Dev Portal. The PlayStation Mobile SDK is available for download for free, and users can create and test content before buying a license. Interested developers will, however, have to pay a $99 fee to put content up on PlayStation Mobile. The fee allows for an unlimited number of app publications per year.
Android devices that are PlayStation Certified include the Sony Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Ion, Xperia Acro and Acro HD, Sony Tablet S and P, HTC One X, One X+, One S, and One V.
Keep in mind that the PlayStation Mobile platform can only be used on up to three devices, a restriction that seems to limit the concept of playing games across multiple devices.
Developers interested in creating content for PlayStation Mobile can set up an account by registering on the PSM DevPortal page. First of all, users will have to sign into the Sony Entertainment Network. Those who don't already have an ID will be prompted to create an account and sign in with said account. After that, it's the regular process: (read and) agree to the terms and conditions, fill out the registration form, and verify the email address. Good luck!
