Horror survival games have taken the industry by storm and the anticipated arrival of Naughty Dog’s ‘The Last of Us’ is also expected to make similar impact on the genre and its future growth. Now, per reports, it has been revealed that ‘The Last of Us’ will arrive with a multiplayer mode, alongside a host of pre-order bonuses.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive game has a multiplayer mode, with a new pre-order ad offering extra character skins and customizable items. Although previously never even hinted at, an update on the official PlayStation Blog has revealed that the game will indeed have a multiplayer mode, and it’s expected to be competitive rather than co-operative.

The official PS Blog states that the site is “also excited to announce details on the bonus content you can get for pre-ordering your copy of The Last of Us,” with participating retailers set to offer the Sights and Sounds Pack.

The Sights and Sounds Pack includes:

  • The official soundtrack of the game
  • A PS3 dynamic theme featuring the cover art
  • Two avatars for user’s PSN profile – Winter Joel and Winter Ellie

GameStop is also set to provide exclusive bonus content in addition to the Sights and Sounds Pack. Pre-ordering at GameStop also presents the player with the Survival Pack, which includes:

  • Bonus experience points for multiplayer
  • A multiplayer melee attack booster
  • Some extra starting in-game cash
  • Special customizable character items for multiplayer
  • Two special bonus skins for Joel and Ellie which will be unlocked after completing the single player campaign

However, Naughty Dog is just not ready yet to detail the title’s multiplayer mode.

“Multiplayer, wha? We’re not quite ready to talk about it yet, but stay tuned as we’ll be revealing more details on multiplayer before The Last of Us is released on May 7th, 2013,” the report stated.

“We’ve tried to keep the trailer as spoiler-free as possible, while giving you some hints at the tense, emotional narrative the development team has crafted for The Last of Us,”

‘The Last of Us’ has been currently scheduled to be released worldwide on May 7, 2013, and this was revealed during the Spike Video Game Awards 2012.
