Despite the steady growth of the Windows Phone 8 platform, everything is still not looking well for Nokia as the company is struggling to stay afloat. The question is, what should the company do in this situation? According to Bernstein Research analyst Pierre Ferragu, Nokia should switch to Android before it's too late.
Ferragu believes the slow adoption of Windows Phone could become the downfall of Nokia if the company does not act sooner rather than later. Furthermore, he went on to state that Nokia's exposure to the disappearing feature phone market with its Asha line of devices, could also become a factor that might push the company further into the black. This makes perfect sense, because right now emerging markets have access to low-end Android devices that are more useful than Asha handsets, so there is no reason for consumers to look the other way.
Furthermore, Windows Phone 8 devices are still not able to compete with Android effectively at the low-end spectrum so far as price is concerned. This is where Nokia needs to focus on instead of the dying feature phone market.
However, we're not certain if switching to Android would put an end to the problems Nokia is facing. For this, we only need to take a look at the Android market and see how OEMs apart from Samsung are progressing, and from what we can see, progression has been very slow. Samsung has an iron grip over the Android market, and not even the new HTC One device could put a dent into the market share of the South Korean giant.
As it stands, Nokia knows it has an edge with Windows Phone 8 due to the company being the leader in that space. Nokia might deem it best to stick to a small market where it can be the leader and grow , rather than switch to a huge market where it would become just another OEM and struggle.
