HTC One Developer Edition to go straight to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

Alexandra Burlacu

The HTC One Developer Edition will skip the Android 4.2 build and go straight to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, according to HTC Global Sales President Jason Mackenzie.

HTC announced the Developer Edition of its flagship smartphone earlier this year, offering an HTC One with an unlocked bootloader and 64GB of storage. The handset was designed for those in the developer community who want to create custom ROMs for the HTC One. The company currently sells this version SIM- and contract-free for $649.99.

Both the original HTC One and the Developer edition shipped with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. HTC has since rolled out an update to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in some regions, but the U.S. versions did not receive the upgrade yet. The Verizon version of the HTC One is expected to launch with Android 4.2.2 out of the box. When it comes to the HTC One Developer Edition, however, no updates have made their way to the handset so far.

When one user of the HTC One Developer Edition asked about an update, Mackenzie said that the Developer version will skip the Android 4.2 build altogether.

"We definitely care and want you to have great experience. 2.2 is minor update so decided to go straight to 4.3," Mackenzie replied in a tweet.

Mackenzie offered no exact rollout date for the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, but said that the company hopes to push out the update by the end of September. He noted, however, that this was not set in stone as "sometimes unknowns can arise."

While this is definitely good news for owners of the HTC One Developer Edition, those who own the regular version of the flagship smartphone are likely hoping to get the same treatment soon. The HTC One is one of the hottest devices currently available on the market, but the software version may be a drawback for some.

Mackenzie also said that the company plans to update all HTC One models by the end of September, which means that all versions, including those tied to various carriers, could get an Android upgrade soon.
