Rumors and leaks regarding the purported Nokia Normandy Android handset have been intensifying recently, and a new leak now shows the device prototype.
While some claim that this project is already dead and buried and others claim that it still has a shot to see the light of day, the rumor mill is still churning and coming up with new leaks.
Just recently, some leaked press images have made their way online showing the alleged Nokia Normandy running a highly customized version of Android, seemingly confirming previous reports. A Nokia A110 device also surfaced in the AnTuTu benchmark suite, again fueling rumors of an Android smartphone from the Finnish company. The latest leak now claims to show the engineering prototype of the Nokia Normandy.
The image of the alleged prototype came from Twitter user @seamissu, who shared it after the photo originally surfaced on Chinese social networking site Weibo. As you can see in the image above, the smartphone prototype looks very similar to an Asha phone, which falls in line with previous rumors that it would sport an Asha-like design.
A protective case hides most of the device's form factor, and the screen only displays the Nokia logo, not the previously-leaked Android UI, making it rather difficult to determine whether the leaked image is indeed of the Nokia Normandy or some other Nokia device.
These leaks may suggest that the Normandy may still be in development and could see the light of day, but nothing is confirmed at this point. Android fans have been dreaming of a Nokia Android smartphone for a long time, but so far Nokia has remained committed to its arrangement with Microsoft, launching only Windows Phone handsets.
Even if the project is not dead, it's quite unlikely that Nokia would launch the Normandy anytime soon. The company has agreed to sell its entire devices unit to Microsoft and is not allowed to utilize its brand on mobile devices for 30 months. On the other hand, where there's a will, there's a way, so it's not entirely out of the question.
According to leaks so far, the purported Nokia Normandy is expected to run a forked version of Android 4.4.1 KitKat, pack a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.2GHz, have dual-SIM support, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a modest display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels.
With no official confirmation, however, it is highly advisable to take all leaks, rumors and speculations with a hefty grain of salt.
