Dell Latitude 7285 2-in-1: The First Laptop With Wireless Charging Technology
Gloven RamosWireless technology is almost in every device today, like wireless speaker and wireless charging. In the recent CES 2017, Dell showcased a laptop with wireless charging technology, the Latitude 7285.
The Dell Latitude 7285 is a 2-in-1 laptop computer with detachable screen attached to a keyboard base. Based on the AirFuel Alliance's emerging wireless PC charging standard, the Latitude has been the first ever wireless charging laptop.
For wireless charging, Dell Latitude 7285 laptop can be charge by putting the keyboard dock on the wireless charging mat. This way of charging is similar to smartphone with the same technology today, but this laptop is a bigger device compared to a handset.
Despite of this cool wireless charging technology, this laptop has a low-power Intel Kaby Lake chip that only draws 4.5 watts of power. It is very slow to charge, especially with laptop's bigger battery.
The Latitude 7285 wireless charging feature, however, is optional. The 2-in-1 laptop can also charge using wired charger through a USB-C port.
According to PC World, because of this technology with low charging speed, Dell's doesn't have plans to put this wireless charging to host a new device after the Latitude 7285. This low charging speed rate if wireless technology is limited only to low-power devices.
At some point, Dell also hopes that this Latitude 7285 gives an idea of how the consumers respond to wireless charging laptop computers. On how this technology helps them and if there is a need for it. The Latitude is the first of its kind, but for Dell, it is still years away for mainstream laptops to have wireless charging technology.
The Dell Latitude 7285 2-in-1 laptop will be launched in June 2017. The price starting at $1,100 USD per unit. The keyboard dock and wireless charging mat will cost extra of $270 USD.
