It would appear Microsoft is gaining early success with Outlook.com if the early numbers are to be believed. Since making its way to the public, Microsoft's Outlook.com email service saw 1 million users signing up in the first 6 hours, probably more than what Microsoft was expecting. This goes to show the influence Microsoft still has in the tech world, and it will continue for a long time with this heavy focus on Metro.
Soon Outlook.com will have Skype well integrated, which means users will be able to make video calls, and send IMs to Skype contacts right from inside the browser. Microsoft bought Skype back in 2011 for massive $8.5 billion; we are surprised it took the company so long to make use of what Skype has to offer. Skype will also feature in Windows Phone 8, so no matter where you are, missing out on anything happening on Skype is not an option.
With Outlook.com now gaining a lot of buzz, Microsoft hopes it can use the platform to draw users away from Gmail and other email service providers. Currently, Gmail sits on top with 425 million users, Hotmail trailing behind with 350 million, not too far away from overtaking Gmail, and yes, it is possible.
Are you among the first 1 million to sign up for Outlook.com? What do you think of how it looks so far, and would you use it as your primary webmail service?
