‘Diablo 4’ Confirmed: Release Date May Be Further Away Than We Thought [VIDEO]

We're definitely getting "Diablo 4" --- just not any time soon. David Brevik, the former Lead Developer for Diablo 2, shares what he knows about Blizzard's plans for the fourth installment of their hit dungeon crawler. Considered to be one of the fathers of the franchise, Brevik gives his insights for the future of "Diablo 3" and what we can hopefully expect from "Diablo 4." He also surmises that the "Diablo 4" release date is probably a bit too far away to make any guesses.

'Diablo 4' Confirmed: Possible Open World Environment, New Map

YouTube user Rhykker, who is known primarily as one of the best sources for "Diablo" news, managed to get an interview with former Diablo 2 Lead Developer David Brevik. Among other things, Brevik confirmed Blizzard's plans for "Diablo 4," but he refused to make any concrete speculations regarding a release date, storyline, and potential new features. You can check out the interview here.

According to iTechPost, Brevik says Blizzard may "take a different approach with Diablo 4," regarding the game environment. Diablo games are known for their dark, gritty environments, emulating a world plagued by demons and the undead. For the fourth installment, the former Blizzard developer hints at the possibility of an open world environment "similar to Skyrim." While that would be an interesting take on the Diablo franchise as a whole, it's purely guesswork at this point.

'Diablo 3: Rise of the Necromancer' will be D3's Final DLC

According to Rhykker's summary of the interview, Brevik believes there won't be any more content after "Diablo 3: Rise of the Necromancer" is released. Seeing as "Diablo 3" was first released June 2012, it's been five years of content and expansion packs for D3. Ergo, it makes sense to think of "Rise of the Necromancer" as the last big DLC before "Diablo 4."

'Diablo 4' Release Date

Brevik reiterates that we probably won't be getting "Diablo 4" for a while. Aside from the fact that Blizzard's current focus is on the Necromancer DLC, the previous Diablo games had pretty huge gaps between releases. Trusted Reviews lists the release dates of the three "Diablo" installments and their corresponding major DLC.

To put things in perspective, the very first "Diablo" game came out in 1996. "Diablo 2" followed four years later in June 2000. Then it was a full 12 years before "Diablo 3" came out in June 2012. With five years of "Diablo 3," we're crossing our fingers that we won't have to wait until 2024 before we finally get "Diablo 4."
