"Glassdoor is excited to announce our fifth annual Employees' Choice Awards, a list of the 50 Best Places to Work. The top 50 winners were selected by the people who know these companies best - their employees," noted the job site.

Facebook edged out McKinsey & Company to take the top honors, making it the best place to work in America. The Palo Alto-based company held the distinction in 2010, but had fallen to the third spot in last year's rankings.

In case you're wondering why Facebook is "the" company to work for and tops the popularity chart, it can be largely attributed to the employee-friendly work environment. Facebook is known for having facilities like snack lounges, onsite ping pong, a gym etc. and gives the all-important fat pay check.

Facebook on an average gives salaries of $114,000 per year to software engineers. Product managers at the company have higher pay that hovers around $132,000 per year. What's more, even the newbies get paid well with a tech internship stipend ranging from $5,600 to $6,300 per month on an average, which is nearly $25,000 more than the salary of an average full-time employed American.

The top 10 list also included Google who has fallen from fifth last year to sixth this year. Glassdoor' top 10 list of best places to work is as follows:

  1. Facebook
  2. McKinsey & Company
  3. Riverbed Technology
  4. Bain & Company
  5. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
  6. Google
  7. Edelman
  8. National Instruments
  9. In-N-Out Burger
  10. Boston Consulting Group

The complete top 50 list from Glassdoor can be viewed here. Check out the Glassdoor video below to get a peek into why Facebook employees love the company so much.
