While some carriers are still struggling to offer 4G or LTE speeds, Samsung claims it's working on a 5G platform which could provide downloads at 1Gbps.
The South Korean tech giant conducted trials with 5G wireless connectivity boasting bandwidths of 1Gbps using the 28GHz frequency and hopes it can deploy a 5G network by 2020. Prototypes of devices that would be able to support 5G service include 64 antenna elements.
The 5G system would allow for data transmission at blazing speeds, hundreds of times faster than the current speeds most networks provide. Since 1Gbps is significantly faster, Samsung claims that downloading UHD movies and providing remote medical services would be "practically without limitation."
Most countries currently have some type of 4G services, but China and the UK are yet to roll out a fully-fledged 4G networking. This means that even if 5G could roll out by 2020, it could take years for it to reach various countries.
Samsung, however, believes that rolling out the 5G service would be easier than it was for similar efforts in the past, and that's due to the development of a new millimeter wave band that works at a 28GHz frequency covering up to 2 kilometers - better than any previous wave band.
"The implementation of a high-speed 5G cellular network requires a broad band of frequencies, much like an increased water flow requires a wider pipe... While it was a recognized option, it has been long believed that the millimeter-wave bands had limitations in transmitting data over long distances due to its unfavorable propagation characteristics," explains the company.
"Samsung's latest innovation is expected to invigorate search into 5G cellular communications across the world...The company believes it will trigger the creation of international alliances and the timely commercialization of related mobile broadband services."
While an entire commercial 5G network will not roll out until after 2020, Samsung believes it will be able to commercialize 5G itself before then. Samsung touts a major innovation with this breakthrough. While this would give the company important leverage in the mobile technology market, Samsung hopes it will also inspire other companies to further research 5G and make advancements.
